One of America’s Most-Haunted Theaters is in Tupelo, Mississippi – Our Mississippi Home

Summary:

Tupelo’s Lyric Theatre – opened in 1912 as the Comus and converted to a movie house with its now-iconic marquee in 1931 – has long mixed showbiz lore (like Elvis’s rumored first kiss) with ghost stories. Its most famous legend is “Antoine,” a mischievous presence said either to have been a former caretaker who lived beneath the stage or a child who died after the devastating 1936 F5 tornado, when the Lyric served as a makeshift hospital and morgue. Guests and staff have reported flickering lights, giggles, and other odd activity, and the Lyric was named one of America’s six most haunted theaters in 2001. After a three-year hiatus, Tupelo Community Theatre brought back its annual “Haunted Theatre” in 2022.
